Day 48: Mommy & Baby Week

November 17, 2011

Daddy is out of town this week on business so Sofia and I have had a lot of 1-on-1 time. She has been doing really well. Today she was reduced to .25L of flow and tolerated it well, she is really getting stronger each and every day. Her only issue is nutrition at this point. Weight gain has been up and down with a loss of 30 grams, followed by a gain of 70 and another loss of 10, all equaling out to 3lbs1oz tonight. We are looking for much more consistency. Guess it’s a meeting with the Doc tomorrow!

I sat by her bedside for a little while this afternoon and just watched her as she moved her hands in her sleep and stirred to wake up. She peeked her little eyes open and closed them a few times and laid there content in her isolette. It’s her little bubble. It’s warm, it muffles noise, covered in a quilt it’s dark and no one goes in to touch her without Purell or gloves. She’s used to it and so am I. She’s protected, she’s safe in her little fishbowl. I know she’s being monitored and free from stresses and noise and all I could think while watching is this perfect little environment is temporary and she doesn’t even know change is coming.

Her next “graduated” step is to an open air crib. This means she will be open to bright lights, noise and the bustle of nurses and visitors, monitor
alarms and other babies crying. She’ll have no space to escape the chaos. I know she’ll hate that and I hate it for her.

I won’t be there to rock her at 3am if her surroundings scare her. I can’t shield her eyes all day if she’s bothered by the lights. These are the little NICU nuances that are hard to handle even when the clinical things are going well. But this is only the beginning. There is a day in the not too distant future where we’ll leave the NICU.
That scares me more than being away from her. We’ve all been sheltered in this experience. All visitors scrub in like surgeons for 3 minutes before entering rooms with these tiny little ones. They have the best doctors and nurses watching each breath they take. Soon we are on our own. No more gloves. No more scrubbing in. She’ll be out in the open, the real world…no more bubble. Maybe when you leave the hospital with baby in tow, still in a haze of endorphins just 48 hours after delivery it might not sink in, or maybe it does. All I know is having time to anticipate each step is enough to throw paranoia into overdrive. Maybe I shouldn’t worry for her and her ability to adapt, maybe it’s me who I think will have the real struggle.

Day 44: Big milestone!

November 14, 2011

We had a big milestone today! Sofia hit the big 3 pound mark. It’s incredible how much she’s changed in the last 6 weeks and just in time for her 32 week gestation mark tomorrow.

It will be incredibly easy to remember when she hit her big mark…today is her Uncle Brandon’s birthday! She wanted to give him a special goal for his birthday gift. 🙂

Happy bday Brandon and way to go baby girl!

Day 42: Mommy and Sofie have a secret!!!

November 11, 2011

Geez, this week has flown by! I didn’t even realize it’s been 7 days since the last post. Here’s a run down on the week. We’ve had some great gains in growth this week. As of last night she is up to 2lbs11oz which puts over 1lb over her birth weight. She’s getting chubbier each day! She was also able to wear clothes for the first time this week. The hospital provides little outfits so of course some of them are really ugly and most of them are amazingly huge. But she really seems to like clothes…not that I ever doubted she’s be a little fashionista.

Yesterday was bath night and this week was Daddy’s turn to give her a little bath. She loved it and fell right to sleep after it was over. She had her eye exam on Monday were the Ophthamologist was looking to see if she had Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) which can cause blindness. Her exam showed that she did not have ROP. She does have some prematurity in her vision but that was to be expected because she still shouldn’t be here for another 8 weeks! All things considered it was an up week for sure.

It was such a good week in fact that Mommy got a little restless and now Sofia and I have a little secret. I was told that around 31 to 32 weeks they begin “lick and learn” where they allow to babies to get acquainted with breastfeeding. I asked early this week if we could start this and got some apprehensiveness. I spoke with the new Neonatalogist who is following her and he said his next goal for her is to attempt breastfeeding. Yesterday, during kangaroo care, she was beginning to root around because it was just before her feed began. No one was around, she seemed interested and I decided she wanted to check out this breastfeeding business. We attempted and SHE LATCHED! Then I got scared that she might actually get something so I pulled her off. She was not very happy about this last part. But the main point is she latched, we were told she would only lick and that was IF she was interested at all. She made it clear…she is interested! We have an actually appointment set this afternoon with lactation support, for now, our first attempt is our little secret. :

Hospital clothes are the pits! But she looked like a little doll 🙂
Looking like a “real” baby.
I think she’s being swallowed by her jammies. Haha

Welcome!

Hi, my name is Chenoa! I'm a Florida native originally from Miami but has been living in Maitland for 22 years with a short 2-year break where she lived in (and fell in love with) Raleigh, NC. She’s part “adopted Southern charm” with a streak of feisty Miami girl! Read More…
